| Entry qualification | High school / secondary education (or higher) Applicants applying for undergraduate degree studies are required to have completed their secondary/high school education. | Language requirements | English Russian Applicants must prove their English and Russian language knowledge The knowledge of the Russian language is confirmed by TORFL (Test of Russian as a Foreign Language) test results that correspond to at least the B2 level Russian language proficiency must be provided, except in case if previous education is obtained in Russian. If previous education is obtained in Russian, an official letter from the school, where is stated that all your studies were in Russian medium, must be presented. If your previous studies have been obtained in English but not in the country listed below, then you have to present an official letter from your previous educational institution (secondary school, etc.) where is stated that all your studies were in English (medium of instruction is English), and you have to pass interview where the University of Latvia will evaluate your language skills. Applicants who have obtained previous education in English in one of the bellow listed countries do not need to provide separate language proficiency: Internationally recognized foreign language certificate does not have to be presented if the foreigner has acquired secondary education in a country of the EU and the EEA or in the Swiss Confederation and in his secondary education certificate is included an assessment of foreign language skills, which are comparable to at least level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). |

Overview
The aim of the bachelor’s study subprogramme “Russian Philology” is the following: to provide the academic general knowledge in the field of Russian philology, linguistics and literary studies that correspond to the modern requirements; to offer the specialization in the sphere of the Russian and Slavic languages and cultures; to educate highly qualified, competitive specialists in the sphere of the Russian philology.
The tasks of the study subprogramme include the following:
1. To offer students an opportunity to study the Russian language, literature, culture in both the diachronic and synchronic aspects, taking into consideration the interlinguistic and intercultural relations.
2. To increase the students’ chances at the labour market by providing students with the opportunity to study another Slavic language.
3. To stimulate the students’ interest in the Russian philology, offering not only the basic courses in the field of Russian Philology – in linguistics and literary studies, but also the career-oriented courses in the sphere of mass media and culture management, publishing, etc.
The students acquire basic and specialized knowledge in the field of Russian philology – study the Russian language in the theoretical and applied aspect, the history and theory of Russian literature in a broad cultural-historical context. Students will choice additional modern Slavic language (Czech, Polish) and practically oriented courses, which form professional and practical competencies in translation, editing, improvement of speech and writing styles, in the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language. The programme envisages students’ mobility within the framework of Erasmus in the institutions of higher education of Estonia (Tartu and Tallinn Universities), Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, Germany, and many others.
The programme has been developed within the framework of the project “Design of Internationally Competitive Study Programmes Promoting the Development of the National Economy of Latvia at the University of Latvia” (project No. 8.2.1.0 / 18 / A / 015).
Programme structure
Study period for the full-time degree programme is three academic years. Classes are held mainly from 8.30 am till 18.00 pm in the working days.
Career opportunities
Graduates of the subprogramme will be able to work in newspaper and magazine editorial offices, publishing houses, translation and interpreting agencies in Latvia and Europe, in schools and colleges, on the radio and TV, in tourist agencies, in embassies and diplomatic missions of the Slavic states. After successful completion of the subprogramme, graduates may pursue further studies in the Master’s degree subprogramme ‘Russian and Slavic Studies” or in any other relevant programme.
